What is it about drumming that it has enhanced spiritually, culturally and politically the human experience everywhere? When racial justice protests were swept the country in June 2020, Shayla Avery, 16, chose her school in Berkeley, California as the site of her 1st Demonstration and had it all planned out to be joined by drummers. (NYT 8/12). If you have joined in the demonstrations and marches after George Floyd’s murder all over New York City you’ve been joined and led by all kinds of drummers; Fogo Azul NYC, Batalá New York, Liberation Drums, and others. Join with Drummers Royalty Weldon, Velma McKenzie and other New York ‘movement’ Drummers for an evening of “Drumming For Our Lives” sponsored by the Center for Critical Thought and hosted by Alan Schulman and Kim Westcott. Attendees are encouraged to bring a drum or something to bang on as there will be collective participation and a lot of generated energy, vision, power and commitment.
